The jackalope is a mythical North American creature with the body of a jackrabbit and the antlers of an antelope or deer. The word itself is a combination of “jackrabbit” and “antelope”. The legend originated in the early 1900s when brothers Douglas and Ralph Herrick found a jackrabbit near a pair of antlers while hunting. They taxidermied the rabbit, and the jackalope was born.
