This pair of 18th century Derby Porcelain figures depicts two of the greatest writers of all time, William Shakespeare and John Milton. Beautiful pair of late 18th century Derby porcelain figurines or sculptures of William Shakespeare and John Milton, c. 1780. Features Shakespeare beside a plinth applied with busts of Richard II, Elizabeth I and Henry V, resting his elbow on a pile of books which secure an unrolled scroll inscribed with lines from The Tempest, adapted from the marble by Peter Scheemakers in Westminster Abbey. The other of Milton leaning on a circular plinth with embossed Neoclassical scenes and holding a scroll in his hand with an excerpt from his own Paradise Lost Book VII adapted from a plaster maquette by Scheemakers or, alternatively, from a copy made by John Cheere. Both on rectangular neoclassical bases. Each measures approximately 10″ high x 5 3/4″ long x 3 5/8″ deep. Please note the following: Shakespeare with some firing cracks, gilt wear and minor chip to the base, Milton some firing cracks, gilt loss, overpaint to areas including the base that is beginning to peel, overpaint to the shoe possibly from a professional repair, please see all photos.
