Not much about this carving is know, other than it is very old. Some of the lacquer finish is flaking off of the back. There does not appear to be any damage otherwise. 14 5/8” tall and 4 3/4” wide. This item is a vintage hand-carved wooden statue, frequently referred to as a “Drinking Monk” or “Cellarer” figure, often associated with Black Forest carvings. Material: Carved wood. Design: Depicts a cheerful monk holding a goblet in one hand and a large key in the other. Origin: Frequently attributed to 19th-century French or German craftsmanship but origin is not specifically know .
